On board, a satellite named A-1, which will be renamed Astérix once the mission is validated, in homage to the mischievous little Gaul popularized a few years earlier by the comic strip.
The satellite, designed by the company Matra for a military contract from the Délégation ministérielle pour l’armement, is not a flying scientific laboratory. It weighs about 39 to 42 kg, stands 54 centimeters tall and 55 centimeters in diameter, and adopts an original shape composed of two joined cones. Its mission is not to study the stars or to conduct experiments: it must simply validate the reliability of the Diamant launcher and its ability to place a vehicle into Earth orbit.
The success is immediate. By placing Astérix in orbit, France becomes the third autonomous space power in the world, after the USSR and the United States, and the sixth nation to possess a satellite in orbit. A performance all the more remarkable because it rests on relatively young technology, developed in record time. An amusing anecdote later revealed: a simple 8-millimeter wrench, forgotten by mistake in the rocket, was propelled into orbit as well, which even confused the American radars, which detected two objects instead of one.

It travels in a low, elliptical orbit, with a perigee of 527 kilometers and an apogee of 1,697 kilometers, completing a full orbit in just over 107 minutes. According to specialists, it should continue its silent course for centuries more, immune to the passage of time, indifferent to the technological progress that has largely surpassed it.
This small piece of metal, silent almost immediately after its birth, now embodies a form of French space memory.
