In the animal world, every day brings its share of surprises. Yet few stories combine medical prowess, engineering, and… a giant brown bear! This is what Tundra, a brown bear residing at the Lake Superior Zoo in Minnesota, recently experienced: an absolutely unprecedented dental procedure—the placement of the largest metal crown ever fitted on an animal.
A fracture worth the trouble
It all began in 2023, when Tundra fractured one of his four main canines. For a 360 kg animal standing nearly 2.4 meters tall when upright, these teeth are not mere ornaments but essential tools for foraging and interacting with his surroundings. Initially, veterinarians attempted a conventional root canal to treat the damaged tooth. But when the injury resurfaced, the decision was made to go further: a full-coverage crown was deemed necessary to protect the tooth over the long term.
An extraordinary technical feat
This kind of procedure, commonplace in humans, marked a first in veterinary medicine for an animal of this magnitude. The project was undertaken by Creature Crowns, a company specializing in veterinary dentistry, which designed this unique crown. The process began with a wax impression of the fractured tooth, enabling the creation of a metal component perfectly tailored to Tundra’s dentition.
On August 23, under full sedation and with a team ready to intervene in case of any contingency, the veterinary dentist placed the silver crown. The operation lasted about an hour and concluded successfully. To ensure everyone’s safety, a ready-to-respond intervention team stood by, vigilant for any sign of premature awakening.
A new smile for Tundra
Thanks to this full crown, the fractured tooth is now shielded against further injury or infection. Tundra’s life can resume its normal course, and the bear can again eat without pain or risk.
For Caroline Routley, the zoo’s marketing manager, this operation marks a real turning point: “He now has a little sparkle in his smile,” she jokes, underscoring the novelty and symbolic significance of this achievement.

Treating an animal of such size with techniques typically reserved for humans opens up new possibilities.
