Why You Should Use a Pillow When Sleeping

October 13, 2026

To protect your daily health, getting a good night’s sleep is essential. Achieving this can be aided by appropriate bedding that enhances comfort. While the bed base and mattress often draw attention, the pillow is an equally important piece of equipment. Its choice depends on your sleeping position and the level of support you seek. So, why is it recommended to use one?

Maintaining the alignment of the spine

To find a model that suits your sleep habits, you can choose from a range of pillows offering different support levels. However, it is important to consider the height and firmness of the pillow to keep your spine properly aligned. Indeed, when you lie down, inadequate support can place your head too high or too low and amplify cervical tension.

When you sleep on your side, the pillow fills the gap between the shoulder and the head, preventing the neck from tilting downward. When you lie on your back, it should support the natural curve of the neck without forcing the head forward. On the stomach, a pillow that is too thick can, conversely, increase discomfort. The support must therefore be tailored to your usual sleeping position.

Limiting muscular and joint tension

Sleeping with unsuitable support can promote pain upon waking. Cervical pain, for instance, can be exacerbated by prolonged awkward positioning. You may also experience tension in the shoulders and upper back, which can be linked to an uncomfortable sleeping posture.

A suitable pillow can help support the head and limit tensions associated with its position. However, comfort also depends on the mattress and the bed frame. If you choose your bedding from a French bed frame brand, be sure to consider all of these components. A pillow, even a high-quality one, cannot by itself correct all sources of pain.

The influence of sleep position on breathing

The head-and-body position at bedtime can affect the airways. Consequently, side sleeping can help reduce snoring for some people, especially when snoring tends to occur primarily when on the back. The pillow can support the neck to accompany this position, providing comfortable neck support.

However, simply selecting a high-quality pillow is not a guarantee of eliminating snoring. Its role is primarily to help you maintain an appropriate position. When snoring is accompanied by pauses in breathing or significant daytime sleepiness, consulting a doctor is necessary.

Digestive comfort

For people with heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), elevating the upper body may be recommended. This leverages gravity to limit the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus during sleep.

Nevertheless, raising only the head with a pillow is not always sufficient. A physician may advise elevating the head of the bed. An appropriate inclined support can also allow you to raise the upper body, rather than merely the neck.

In short, the pillow is a bedding accessory not to be neglected. It contributes to maintaining a good sleeping position and can improve daily comfort. To enjoy its benefits fully, it is advisable to choose a model suited to your sleep habits.
