Sugar blamed for making kids unruly for decades, but what excites them nowadays doesn’t come from their plates

For decades, people have claimed that sugar turns children into little uncontrollable tornadoes, unable to sit still after a birthday party treat. Yet the experiments conducted to test this belief have not confirmed the link: in the vast majority of studies, sugar consumption did not lead to an increase in hyperactivity or disruptive behavior. What makes a child hyperactive on a party day is not straightforward to identify, but apparently it isn’t simply what they just swallowed.

The real culprit, however, is almost never mentioned.

Where does the idea that sugar excites children come from?

This sugar-hype myth dates back to a handful of studies from the 1970s and early 1980s, conducted around a dietary regimen intended to calm restless children by removing certain foods and additives. Popularized in mainstream media well before it was solidly validated, this regimen eventually attached an unwarranted reputation to sugar. The initial idea was that a diet containing certain additives could worsen behavioral problems in children, not that sugar alone was the sole trigger.

This regimen also banned artificial colorings, preservatives, and even some fruits and vegetables rich in salicylates, a compound found naturally in foods as wholesome as apples, berries, tomatoes, broccoli, or certain dried fruits. Sugar was just one ingredient on a long list, but it’s the one that ended up sticking in collective memory.

What double-blind experiments show

To test the hypothesis seriously, researchers gave children either sugar or an artificial sweetener, ensuring that neither the children, their parents, nor the observation team knew who received which. This double-blind protocol was repeated in more than twenty distinct experiments, all built on comparing the same children on sugar and then on placebo. Result: across about fifteen different behavioral and cognitive measures, none showed a significant difference between the two groups, and sugar did not increase hyperactivity. Children who received real sugar did not become more agitated than those who had taken a placebo.

Sugar, by itself, does not make you hyperactive.

Some more recent, observational studies have explored a possible link between highly sugary drinks and symptoms in children already being followed for attention difficulties. These data remain observational, meaning they can show an association without proving that sugar is the cause. In the vast majority of children without any particular disorder, the behavioral effect of sugar remains simply undetectable in controlled protocols.

The real trigger: context, not the plate

Birthdays, year-end celebrations, and playdates are also moments when children eat the most sweets. These occasions are characterized by loud music, other children shouting, and the novelty of the situation at its peak; sugar is merely present at the same moment as the agitation, not the cause. Another possible biological factor relates to the anticipation of a reward. The hyperactivity observed by parents after consuming sugary foods would be partly linked to a dopamine release triggered as soon as a reward is anticipated, long before the cake is served.

This bias has been measured directly in the laboratory. Parents convinced that their child had consumed a sugary beverage judged them more agitated, even when the child had only received a placebo drink. Expecting that sugar will alter a child’s behavior is enough to influence how one interprets what is observed next.

Sugar is present, rarely the culprit.

Sugar remains a health topic, for other reasons

That does not render sugar a neutral food. High consumption remains associated with an increased risk of diabetes, weight gain, dental cavities, and heart disease. These reasons alone are ample justification for moderation, without needing to invoke hyperactivity that does not hold up in practice.

The question remains open for children who already carry an attention-related diagnosis: some glycemic fluctuations after very sugary foods could temporarily influence concentration, according to studies still considered preliminary by the researchers conducting them. For the vast majority of children, however, the whirlwind of a birthday party has never required sugar to set off.
