A dream two and a half millennia old
The idea of piercing the Isthmus of Corinth did not originate in the 19th century. The notion of a Corinth Canal goes back to Periander of Corinth in the 7th century BCE, but discouraged by the sheer scale of the project, he opted instead to develop the Diolkos, a dragging path to move ships. The Greek financier Andreas Syngrós then took up the task.
