This phenomenon has a technical name among forest-fire specialists: pyroconvection. An intensely hot fire generates its own weather, with columns of hot air rising, drawing in surrounding oxygen, and then dropping back in unpredictable swirls. The fire no longer merely follows the wind; it makes its own wind. The result? Forecasts of spread, usually calculated in hours, become obsolete in a matter of minutes. Despite a fierce, relentless battle by about a thousand firefighters, the night from Thursday to Friday felt like an inferno, in a situation considered “worse” than the mega-fires of 2022, summarized Marc Vermeulen. A line that, coming from a man used to the worst summers in the Médoc, is a red alert.

The Wind Shifts, the Dry Thunderstorm Looms

Add to this mechanism a factor no one can fully control: the weather. The head of SDIS 33 spoke of a “grave concern as the wind would swing to the west with gusts that could reach 80 km/h, if these winds were combined with dry thunderstorms according to Météo-France.” A dry thunderstorm is the worst possible update for a fire already out of control: lightning strikes without rain to accompany them, capable of igniting new fire starts miles from the main blaze, while 80 km/h gusts shift the front’s direction in minutes.

This is precisely what prompted the prefect to act decisively: “We feared it—the big XXL fire, unpredictable, making 1-kilometer leaps and voracious,” described Sophie Brocas during a press briefing. “At midnight, this fire suddenly roared. My priority is to protect lives and people, so I ordered the evacuation of the peninsula and Le Porge in the dead of night.” A decision made in the dead of night, with no time for reflection, because the fire itself offered none.

The “biggest fire of the season” kept raging violently in Gironde, according to the interior minister. An Entire Peninsula Evacuated in a Few Hours

Navigation in the Arcachon basin was temporarily halted to secure the maritime operation.

In the wake of this, the prefecture pressed on. Further evacuations were underway in Andernos, Arès, Le Temple, and Saumos, confirmed Sophie Brocas, evidence that the front remained active across several communes at once. As a precaution, residents of the Les Tchanqués nursing home in Lège-Cap-Ferret were also relocated to suitable facilities—a reminder that behind the burned-hectare figures are elderly and vulnerable people who must be moved urgently, not just secondary homes.
