In the United States, scientists are unveiling a novel optical device. It is a mirror that has the unique ability to reflect a predefined image that is completely different from the actual object or person standing before it. How does this deceptive mirror work? Why might the military be interested in it?
Warping any image into a single visual output
Traditionally, ordinary mirrors simply reflect light faithfully, showing exactly what is in front of them. However, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (United States) have repurposed this primary function. As reported in Nature Communications on August 7, 2026, scientists have developed a “deceptive mirror” capable of returning a preselected image in advance.
Concretely, the surface of this mirror contains numerous tiny structures, micro-reliefs that modify the phase of light waves when they bounce off. To design these reliefs, the team trained a deep learning model. In tests, this neural network demonstrated its ability to compute the exact structure required so that any input image is deformed toward a single, identical output visual.
“The deforming mirror device proved capable of camouflaging different types of input image data, showing robustness against various adversarial manipulations, including random image noise as well as rotations, translations, and random and unknown scaling of object features,” the study states.
A new form of military-type optical camouflage?
Simulations were conducted under lighting at different wavelengths, specifically 480, 550 and 600 nm, covering the blue, green, and red image channels. Yet the researchers managed to force the mirror to “lie” in several ways. Initially, it could transform the image of any clothing into a bag. Next, the device demonstrated the ability to convert any handwritten digit into the digit 8. Finally, researchers succeeded in turning various drawings into a panda face. Moreover, the mirror showed a degree of robustness. The authors rotated, enlarged and moved it, and each time the device continued to display the programmed decoy without issue.
Not surprisingly, the researchers’ goal is not to produce novelty mirrors for the general public. Indeed, this is a technology that could eventually attract military interest. When applied as a coating, it represents a new form of optical camouflage capable of concealing military equipment or sensitive infrastructure. With such protection, these elements would become invisible to humans and to devices such as satellites.
Among other potential applications, it could be used to sabotage enemy optical reconnaissance. The mirror is indeed capable of creating total visual ambiguity that, in theory, could mislead enemy forces, whether satellites, drones or ground troops. The device would also remain effective even in the presence of a high-definition camera or a coherent laser illumination system. In the long term, this innovation could potentially replace certain active camouflage systems currently in use, such as flexible LEDs, which are particularly vulnerable on a battlefield.
