Can cats really understand certain words as well, or even better, than young children? A recent Japanese study found that our feline companions are capable of forming associations between images and words at about four times faster than human infants. This striking observation raises fascinating questions about how animals understand the world around them and, in particular, about the untapped linguistic potential of cats.
When animals decode language
Humans aren’t the only ones able to understand language. Some animal species have already demonstrated remarkable abilities in this area. Monkeys, for example, can link words to symbols or images, while African grey parrots are capable of understanding and responding to spoken instructions. Dogs, meanwhile, have been trained to recognize and respond to a simple vocabulary, such as their name or basic commands.
But what about cats? Studies on language comprehension in these animals are limited, and researchers have only recently begun to explore this field. It is already established that cats are sensitive to the sound of words, such as their name or that of their human companions, and that they can even recognize human intonations. However, the idea that they could associate words with images in a way similar to young children was an untested hypothesis until today.
A playful experiment with surprising results
To explore cats’ associative abilities, researcher Saho Takagi and her team at Azabu University in Japan designed an experiment inspired by those used to study language comprehension in babies. They presented thirty-one adult cats with two short, nine-second animated sequences in which each image was paired with an invented word. A red sun, for instance, was paired with the word ‘paramo,’ while a blue unicorn was paired with the word ‘keraru.’
The sequences were repeated until the cats seemed to lose interest, which signals that they had memorized the associations. Then, the researchers swapped the words linked to the images: this time, ‘paramo’ referred to the unicorn and ‘keraru’ to the sun. The change clearly unsettled the cats, who paid more attention to the screen, indicating that they had noted the inconsistency. Some felines even dilated their pupils, a sign of concentration and curiosity.
This reaction is evidence that the cats have established a link between the words and the initial images, and that they were disturbed by the change. The experiment also showed that cats can form these associations in just two nine-second exposures, i.e., much faster than young children who require about four twenty-second trials.
However, the researchers emphasize that comparing adult cats to young children is complex: the cognitive abilities of a toddler are still developing, and interpreting the reactions of another species remains a delicate exercise. “Humans are programmed to understand the behaviors of their own species, but interpreting those of a domestic animal requires nuances,” explains Dr. Carlo Siracusa, a veterinary behaviorist.
What this means for us and our cats
These discoveries open up intriguing avenues for reflection on how we interact with our pets and how they perceive our attempts at communication. This study shows that cats are not merely receptive to auditory and visual signals, but that they are also capable of associating them and detecting inconsistencies. However, there are still many questions to explore.
